The Roar had a video branch my freshman year but that quickly died after our equipment became outdated and our main video person graduated. At the end of my junior year, the other editors and I agreed to re-start the branch as a senior project for us. I did the research and wrote a grant to receive new equipment including: microphones, a tripod, and a new camera. Another editor and I sealed the deal by being the first and only students to present for a grant in front of the board.
One of the biggest things we wanted to try and accomplish this year was to put people in front of a camera to humanize them a little more than normal. It's different to sit down and read a 600 word story about them then to see them interact in front of a camera. This is a video series I started with various different captains of different sports to a play a new version of "The Newlywed Game." This gave better insight into who these athletes were off the field/court. A lot of our videos aren't "journalistic" in nature but by doing stuff like this, it engages the students to read our other articles on our website that are. The day this video came out, our readership for that day and our stats for other published articles were higher than normal.
After seeing a TikTok with a similar idea, I put my own twist to it. In honor of the boys varsity basketball team starting their season, we split the team into two smaller teams to play a game of Pictionary, but the twist was that it was with their opponent's logos. It was a great way to introduce the season and gave content for their game day posts as well.
